Hayfield House in West and Mid Calders I think its in Midlothian
« on: Saturday 04 February 17 22:14 GMT (UK) »
I'm wondering if anyone lives in this area and has heard of this place. It was known as Hayfield before 1804 when it was renamed Harburn. I have found images of Harburn Estate and the new Harburn House built 1804 and a few references to Hayfield House that state it is just North of the New House but no images. I'm wondering if this place Hayfield House is still standing on the Harburn Estate, I have tried contacting Harburn House by email they have not responded and I have also sent an email to portalhistoricenvionment.scot. Beside suggesting Canmore which I can't access; they were not able to help much as I'm in Canada; not Scotland.

Any ideas on where else I might look or any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you and Cheers
Melodie

I have never heard of Hayfield but I have heard of Harburn House. It is in the parish of West Calder which is historically in the County of Midlothian.

See
http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NT0460 and
http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NT0461

This map http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17&lat=55.8313&lon=-3.5269&layers=5&b=1 shows Harburn in the mid-19th century. If you click on the blue dot in the menu panel at left and slide it to the left you can see how it the map relates to the satellite view.

I don't understand why you can't access Canmore. Try this link
https://canmore.org.uk/site/212698/harburn-house and also

http://portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/GDL00208 which confirms the link between Harburn and Hayfield.

Hayfield is also mentioned in the Statistical Account of Scotland. See http://stataccscot.edina.ac.uk/static/statacc/dist/viewer/osa-vol18-Parish_record_for_Calder_West_in_the_county_of_Edinburgh_in_volume_18_of_account_1/

It does seem that nothing remains of Hayfield House.

Thank you for you help. Some of the images of Harburn are Beautiful; I now understand why he loved the place as he described it in his Will and Testament. The reason I'm having trouble with access to Canmore is because I live in Canada and can't easily view the images that are in the  collection, because they do have digital copies. I have emailed them and I'm hoping they can help bring some clarity and I'm hoping to buy scanned images if possible.

Thank you

Were you able to view the link I sent you? The associated photographs are not always all online.

Hi Jamie thank you for responding. Do you by chance remember any stories about a ship Captain James Pittullo, he lived there from about 1787 to about 1795 when he sold it. Are there any buildings from when he owned it still standing, I'm curious about the old garage I guess it would be from the old photos I have seen.

Any information you have or can remember is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
