Images not copied over from old to new laptop on PAF
« on: Sunday 05 February 17 18:22 GMT (UK) »
I have recently bought a new laptop and asked my computer techies to copy the PAF, version 5 family history from the old to the new machine. All appeared to be well until I found that "multimedia" , ie photos , had not been copied although the titles of the images were there. My previous laptop ran Windows 7 and the new one Windows 10. Would that be part of the problem ?
Is there any way to restore the images without the labour of doing it all by hand  ?

I shall need a new project for the Spring  !

Assuming you mean Personal Ancestral File (PAF) from FamilySearch?

"FamilySearch will no longer offer PAF downloads or support after JULY 15, 2013"
"PAF will continue to work on all versions of Windows as of 2013, including Windows 8. Just be aware that it will no longer be supported or improved."

I was aware that support was not available  - it seems odd in that case  that that all the text from the original copy has been transferred to a Windows 10 machine despite the message from Family Search.
I have a seved version on an external hard drive - would that install the missing images ?

When you export a PAF file, there is a button to check to include multi-media. Sounds like this was not done.

Many thanks Rosy, that could well be the answer. I shan't leave it to the techie guru next time.

Hi

Assuming the old program was re-installed (you didn't mention)

Data file -

Did they export it using gedcom?
[On-spec Gedcom files do not contain any media, by definition.]

Did they transfer (just copy) the paf file?
If they did then copying the media folder may work, because the PAF file would not have lost the links to individual media elements.

If they selected an export without the media data then the exported file may not have the links to the individual media elements.

If you have the images on the external Hard Drive all you have to do is copy the images to the relevant folder on the internal drive.
It sounds as if PAF has the image locations but the images are not in that location

Many thanks to Ray, Rosy and Guy. I'll set to and try the suggestions about reuniting the images with the individuals. I suppose in retrospect, I should have done the transfer myself !

Hello :)

I use PAF alongside my other stuff.

However regarding transfer of images, I always do seperately.

Next to my PAF file on the desktop I have a folder with the images in and always keep them together.

So  I think if you go to your old Laptop where the PAF was... and go into the PAF folder you will see the image file?!?!    copy this onto disc or external hd  or wotever :)  and then pop into new laptop
...

open up the file on laptop and make sure you KEEP it with the or in the PAF FOLDER

open up your PAF PROG   and attempt to open a multimedia image... it will tell you its not there so ... give it directions to the new folder of images you have created.    It will then ask if you want to import all multimedia from this folder and you say yes to next two questions. :)

Now that works as long as you remember to ALWAYS keep the folder with the PAF   other wise it wont work.  It will then transfer all directions to that folder :) so you dont have to do it individually

I hope you can understand what I mean, cos I am not very good at explaining, just come and sit here and I will show you :) :) :)

hopefully sorted now
