Has anyone researched the Eames and Osgood families of Chawton?
« on: Sunday 05 February 17 22:20 GMT (UK) »
I have a Mary Eames (b.1727 Chawton) marrying James Osgood in Chawton in 1748.
They had 7 children, all baptised in Newton Valence.

Mary's Parents were Robert Eames and Mary Minivee (which is an unusual surname but i haven't been able to find any info about the family)
They were married in selborne.

Roberts parents were Jethro and Dorothy. That's as far back as i have got. I've seen online the name EAMES being associated with Chawton Manor, but it's very hard to find anything about them.

Does anyone have any of these names in their tree?

Would love to know more about them if anyone can help.
Thanks

I am a Volunteer at the Curtis Museum in nearby Alton and also inherited the notes of Chawton historian Violet Hunt to add to my own of the area. I have 18 pages+ of notes of the local Eames family as a result of doing family and building research in the area.

The family was quite spread out, even by 1665:
1665 Hampshire Hearth Tax

Charles   Chawton      1 hearth   not chargeable
John      Alton         1 hearth   not chargeable
John      Medstead      9 hearths
John      Shalden      4 hearths
Thomas   Shalden      1 hearth
Widow      West Court (Binsted)   1 hearth
William, jun   Empshot      2 hearths
William   Southrope (Herriard)   1 hearth

Also, you may have noticed:
1748   28 Aug., Mary Eames married James Osgood, sojourner,
so James was not a local.
Yours Jane

Hi JaneH. Thanks for replying. I don't know what research you have done for the eames family, but I just wondered if you had any info on mary eames (1727) siblings? I have her as an only child presently.
Also, this surname Minivee, i find it's very unusual. I don't suppose you have any info on mary minvee do you?
Jethro and Dorothy eames are as far as i have got back. i don't know any dates relevant to them.
Do you have any info on them at all?

Many thanks

If you look in the Selborne registers, you will find:
1705   25 Sep., Mary Minivy, bastard child of John Minivy, carpenter of Broad-Windsor in Dorset, and Anne Skelton, baptised in Selborne

So I went to:
Broadwinsor registers
1696   2 Feb., John Menyfye of Abbots Stoke* married Joan Dennis of this parish.
1696   [no date], Elezabeth Minnyfre, child of John, baptised.
1701   19 Oct., John Minnifie, child of John, baptised.
1718   22 Jun., Henry Menneffie, son of John, buried.
* - probably Stoke Abbott?

Using Family Search - I came across lots of people with the name in Dorset - here are just a few@
Stoke Abbott registers
1578   29 June, Thomas Mynifie married his wife.

Sherborne, Dorset:
1789   30 Jan., Thomas Minifie, child of John and Elizabeth, baptised.
1792   15 Feb., John Minifie, child of John and Elizabeth, baptised.
1793   29 May, Ann Jane Minifie, child of John and Elizabeth, baptised.
1802   17 Mar., Eliza Minifie, child of John and Elizabeth, baptised.
1803   30 Mar., James, child of John and Elizabeth, baptised.
1805   7 June, Jane Minifie, child of John and Elizabeth, baptised.
1808   27 Feb., Charles, child of John and Elizabeth, baptised.
1810   22 June, John Minifi, child of John and Elizabeth, baptised.
Also, earlier
1728   1 Oct., Humphry Minivy, child of John, baptised.

1607   3 Dec., John Menfie, child of John, baptised in St Mary’s Beaminster.
1636   15 Nov., John Minifie married Amy Body   “
1687   25 July, John Minyfee was buried.      “
etc., etc.   Yours Jane

Hi, thanks for sharing the information you have on James Osgood and Mary Eames. I too am descended from them, their daughter Hannah is my 6x Great Grandmother. I have been stuck on their origins for years and believed Mary was born elsewhere. The information you have supplied has helped me to break the Eames brick wall! :)

The Eames in my family lived in Farringdon, a neighbouring village of Chawton, for 3 or 400 years at least and had some connections with it. Please contact me for more details. Robert
