Thanks everyone for the info. The only thing that concerned me about the army record was that it appeared to finish in 1914 and when he returned to England in 1926 he was still listed as a soldier. What could he have been doing between those dates?

The Service record I have seen records his discharge in 1919. There is a H Jobson, occupation Govt, on a passenger list in 1919 to Calcutta. Perhaps he was discharged at home and then went back to his family in India but returned with his family to the UK in 1926.

Even though he is recorded as soldier I wonder if he was in the 'reserves'.

There are some more Service records for Henry Jobson I have viewed from 1919 which makes reference to a query regarding his substantive rank of W.O Class 1.

A letter dated 24 Aug 1920 from Henry Jobson (301298) requests that his address be amended to -
Ceylon Light Inf
Slane ? Island
Colombo
Ceylon

At the time of writing he's employed by Colonial Govt and in the position of RSM Instructor. He's requesting that a copy of his Service record be forwarded to the Commandant Ceylon Defence Force.

Therefore it would appear that Henry Jobson was demobbed from the British Army in 1919 and from there enlisted in the Ceylon Defence Force. So that could be the reason why he is recorded as soldier on the 1926 passenger list.

What are you thoughts?

JJ

Thanks for that. As a soldier who had served during the Boer War as well as during WW1 I would assume his expertise would be in demand. If he had enjoyed his time in India it probably wasn't a big step to go to Ceylon. Although he came back to England with his family in 1926 I have not been able to find any of them on the 1939 register although Mary Margaret was married in 1942 in Essex. The search goes on!

Yes this is the correct Amelia. As far as the other children are concerned I have traced Phyllis and Mary. No luck with the others so far.
