« on: Tuesday 07 February 17 05:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I am looking for any information at all on George Minto Jack. From hearsay I think he was born in New Deer?? but if this is wrong can someone please point me in the right direction of parish records for Aberdeenshire. I would be extremely grateful for any help with this.  :)

There is a possible death in Tradeston, Glasgow in 1944 for a George Minto Jack age 80. There is no birth in the period 1863/5 of a George Minto Jack, a George Jack or a George Minto in New Deer, which is the place of birth given on every census from 1871 onwards. There is however a birth for a George Minty in 1863 in New Deer. Familysearch confirms date of birth of 20/7/1863 illegitimate son of Jane Minty. In 1871 Jane Minty(27) is living at Private House, Old Deer with her father George Minty (76) and George's grandson Geo Jack (7). Looks like George has continued to use his birth name as a middle name ( a fairly common occurrence with illegitimate births) and this has evolved into Minto over time. Presumably his father was called ? Jack but not sure how you would identify him unless something appears in the Kirk session records.

Debbie, scotlandspeople has George's birth certificate. It states he was born in Culsh, New Deer. His mother was a domestic servant. Given that his grandfather registered the birth it may have been where his grandparents resided & not necessarily where his mother worked. In 1851 census George Minty, Jane's father is a farmer at Standing Stones, in the district of Culsh, New Deer. His wife is Catherine, & Jane is the youngest of 4 children at home. Hope this helps,

Debbie, this will be of interest to you. It is the memorial inscription on the Minty's headstone. It is located in the Kirkyard of New Deer.
"Erected by George Mintey farmer Standingstones in memory of his spouse Catherine Anderson died 29th Sep. 1868 aged 67. Of their family Peter died 8th August 1842 aged 13, William died 30th May 1854 aged 32, Margaret died 27th March 1863 aged 23, Jean aged 2, Mary aged 3.
Above George Mintey died 25th Feb 1884 aged 90."
If you wish to trace further back the information on the death certificates of George & Catherine will give the names of their parents.
