Sugwas Boat
« on: Tuesday 07 February 17 11:09 GMT (UK) »
My parents often spoke about times spent at the Sugwas Boat (Inn?) in the mid 1930's, and of its characterful landlady.
On a visit to Hereford ( my birthplace) a few years ago I tried to find The Sugwas Boat but couldn't and nobody I asked in Sugwas had heard of it.
Does anybody know anything about it? Does it still exist under a different name?

I see a Boat inn on this 1930 map, close to the river in stretton sugwas parish, near to what once was sugwas ferry, don't know if it is still there

There are mid-nineteenth century newspaper references to it being in the parish of Eaton Bishop.

The ferry crossed the river from sugwas to Easton bishop, I cannot see a pub marked on the 1930 map on the south side of the river, so the boat inn at sugwas might still be a possibility.

It seems probable that The Boat at Sugwas might have been known to Hereford Rowing Club (where my parents met) as The Sugwas Boat to distinguish it from another Boat Inn elsewhere on the river. Thank you all for your help.

The Boat Inn building still stands and the old paintwork decribing it as the Boat Inn is clearly visible.
