Hugh H BALDWIN
« on: Tuesday 07 February 17 13:23 GMT (UK) »
I know the above was a Canadian soldier who married Mary Margaret Kathleen JOBSON in Colchester, Essex. I have found his wife and daughter going to Canada, 2030, Mansfield Street, Montreal to the home of her mother in law Mrs L Baldwin. I know nothing about Hugh and I cannot trace his wife and daughter's return to the UK although I know they did. Can anyone point me towards any records that will fill the gaps particularly whether there were any other children born whilst they were in Canada?

The marriage was 1941 so the birth records for any children born in Canada will be restricted by privacy laws and they could certainly still be living.

The latest available Canadian census in 1921 and online passengers lists for those arriving in U.K. only go up to 1960.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I believe his wife and daughter returned to the UK before 1957 as this was when she remarried. Would there be any divorce records?

Listed at 2030 Mansfield in the 1945 Directory....

Mrs Lucy Baldwin Widow Wm
H Baldwin Soldier (probably Hugh?)
Clyde Baldwin Soldier

Looks like Hugh's parents may be Lucy and William; Clyde is likely his brother.

1946 has H. Baldwin at Apt. 5, 2030 Mansfield, working as a clerk at Eaton's (a department store). Clyde is living at the same address, working as a shipper at Simpson's (another department store).  Same info for 1947, 1948 & 1949.  In 1950, only Clyde and his mother are in the apartment, and no listing for Hugh.  By 1951, none of them are living in that apartment.

Thanks for the residential information. Are there any marriage or death records available online?

Unfortunately Canada does not have any births, marriages or deaths available for the time frame you require. As a guide BMD Records are only available for births more than a 100 years ago, marriages 85 years ago.  Death certificates can be released if the death occurred more than 20 years ago and the deceased would be 75 years of age or more.

Also, in Quebec, the church was the keeper of all records until quite recently, so civil records in that timeframe don't really exist.
