1881 Where was Sarah Ann?
« on: Thursday 09 February 17 20:01 GMT (UK) »
I have details for this person in every census but the 1881 - can anyone help find her. Her name before she married was Sarah-Ann Coleman These are the details I have
born 1849 in Selston - daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Coleman
1851 living in Selston, aged 2 with parents and siblings
1861 Living at Dove Green, aged 12  Selston with parents and siblings
 1867 married Abraham Robert Wharmsby
1871 Sherwood Rise Kirby in Ashfield -  name is shown as S C Whannby, aged 21,  with husband and 2 children

I have her in the 1891 and 1901 and 1911 - where she is still Sarah Ann Wharmsby but in these census she is married to a different man (Joseph Wharmsby - brother of 1st husband) On this marriage certificate to Joseph (1899) she is recorded as Sarah- Ann Coleman.
So in the 1881 she may be using either Wharmsby or Coleman as surname but I cannot find her. Some of you may recognise these names because I have already had loads of help with other members of this  family  -- this is my final link!

Hi Keyboard 86
Do you know I have seen those numbers and references on other posts but have never used them. I have just looked back on my finds and can now see where they are on Ancestry so will bear that in mind in future. Thank you

Hi yes census refs are a boon for searching, especially if found on one site and badly transcribed on another.

Still looking for you, see in 1871 census Elizabeth was b in Derbyshire is she the Elizabeth WORMSBY aged 12 b Pinxton in 1881 shown as a Servant in Main Street, Bulwell?
Census ref RG11/3333/7/8

Go on,  find her by census ref on Anc***!

Hi - well I have had a go but can't get anywhere! I must be missing something that is very obvious. On the site I use I selected the 1871 but the option boxes are for facts such as  name/ place /of birth/ fathers name etc . I can find no where to put in the reference numbers. I will try to find a tutorial to do this  properly as I am aware that I may have been doing some very long winded searches at times!
Though the girl you have found here ( Elizabeth Wormsby) is part of the same family - that surname is spelled is a huge variety of ways) she is not the person i am looking for here. In 1871 my person is Sarah Ann Wharmby RG10 /3479/4/1 - I found that on FindMyPast but am not admitting to the amateurish way I found the reference!!

;) The reference for Elizabeth is for the 1881 census?
If you use FindMyPast go to 1881 census scroll down to PIECE/FOLIO/PAGE and enter numbers?!

On Find my Past you should select the 1871 or whatever year you want by using the A - Z of records.  If you just use Census, Land and Surveys and select the record set then the piece/folio/page boxes do not appear.

A big thank you to you both I have now learnt something new and can use the references on FindMyPast!

Jonathan was living in 1881 with another aunt - I have found him. The girl mentioned here is Elizabeth who is in service. But the person I would love to know about is their mother, Sarah -Ann Wharmsby ( nee Coleman). She seems to have completely disappeared.
