Couldn't find deaths on Queensland indexes. Mmm, same ages and death dates, Ryerson Index for newspaper entries has:

For what it's worth, William and Christina are buried in the Globe cemetery, Motherwell.
Here's a picture of what was once a very fine headstone, now toppled-over and broken. It also mentions a nephew Peter Farqharson who died in infancy 1880 and their son James who fell at Ladysmith in 1900.
There is another Haddow stone there - Thomas Haddow who died 1899 aged 49 and his wife Marion Bell Rae.
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.

I should also say that the signature on the death certificate is JAMES. No question about it. Whoever heard of two brothers having the same name? It may have happened in the Highlands a few hundred years ago but certainly not in 19th century Lanarkshire.

Thank you all - have just logged on and see pages of replies, but now have to go out, so will devour all of this when I get back.  Looks like I need to get the death cert going on death dates mentioned ain these pages and see if the father is David and mother Janet.  Only then will I know who are mine and who not.  Thank you for helping narrow it down.  Sooooo many James Robert and William Haddows to buy certs for otherwise.

Ok everyone - the James people gave me hints on - engine driver d Lesmahagow 1894 - was married to Margaret Ferguson and his death cert via Scotlandspeople says his parents were James Haddow and Mary Wilson - so not my James!  He was aged 59 when he died in 1894 which gives him a birth year of approx 1835.  Back to the drawing board.

Frustrating as it can be for you, at least it is another one ruled out. Hopefully all the suggestions and info provided on this thread about the other James, may help another researcher someday.

What about the William, engine driver, that has been suggested? Did you check him? If not, have you considered instead and/or already ruled out, the death in 1861 of a William Haddow in Dalserf district, aged 23, so born c1838? Death entry ref on SP is 638/2 13. If you search with  mother's surname Todd, this is what is returned. Obviously, it could be a different Haddow/Todd combination, but age and location at least make for a good possibility.
