Warners in Loughborough

Hi all

I have started researching my family, the Warners, in Loughborough. Through the census, I have worked my way back to William Warner, born in 1796 in Loughborough, who marries Catherine Bradford in 1815. Their youngest son, Alfred, is my great-great-great grandfather. However, even though I have searched the Parish Church records, and I am aware that William may have been a member of another church or religion, I cannot find any mention of him. There are a number of other Warner families in Loughborough at this time, many working as framework knitters, but I can't make a firm link to any of them yet. I was wondering if anyone has found a reference to him in their own family trees?

I am also a descendent of William Warner  b1796. He was also my ggg grandfather. His son George Warner b1830 was my grandfather and your ggg grandfather Alfreds brother. I am also looking Williams parents and have hit a brick wall. Any help in this search would be appreciated.

I live in Loughborough & Warner is a very well known name. I know of a Warners Corner for example.


I can check the local records to see if I can see Williams family. do you have census?

Thank you so much for replying.  I do have Warner Censuses for 1841, 1851,1861,and 1871. William died in 1873.  His wife Catherine  born about 1798 . I also have his marriage transcript and banns (All Saints) and death info but I have not found anything definite on his life prior to 1841 except his marriage to Catherine Bradford m1815 and the birth and christening of some of his children.  I cannot find any info about who his parents were or possible siblings.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I have been looking for the past 3 years and have run out of ideas. I posted the initial 'Warners in Loughborough' query and I am really pleased by the replies, which are very interesting....it seems I have a long-lost relative. As I stated,y g-g-g grandfather is William, born 1796 and my family line incorporates the ownership of Chesterton House and Warner's Corner, which I remember fondly. [I think I may have listed William as my 4 times great grandfather but he is in fact only 3 times great to me! I am rather new to the genealogy experience....]

To clarify things a little: the William Warner born in 1796, who marries Catherine Bradford in 1815, is my g-g-g- grandfather and I can't find anything about who his parents were. Perhaps he was a religious non-conformist [Baptist, Particular Baptist, Methodist, Wesleyan; there were many non-cons amongst the framework knitting community at this time]. Perhaps he was born elsewhere in Leicestershire; my brother has said that our grandfather used to mention family connections in Markfield, possibly also Glenfield. Perhaps William is not his first name....there are many potential reasons.

Anyway, there are a number of Warner families living in the area at this time, mostly working as fwks; it is highly likely that our William belongs to one of them. We just have to make a link...

William's, youngest son Alfred, born 1840, who married Elizabeth Bryan [formerly Daulby] was my g-g-grandfather.
His son William, born in 1867, who married Clara, was my great grandfather and the one who started up Warner's Corner in 1907.
His son Alfred Stanley Senior, born 1895, who married Florence Hipwell [from Ibstock/Measham way] was my grandfather; he ran Warner's Corner for many years.
Alfred's sons were; George William Warner, of Costock and Alfred Stanley Warner Junior, of Loughborough, both of whom ran Warner's Corner until Alfred Stanley Junior's premature death in 1979 and the shop's eventual closure in 1983 with the death of Alfred Stanley Senior.
Alfred Senior's daughter Nora married Reginald Beeby and lived in Rempstone until her recent death.
My father was Alfred Stanley Junior, known to all as Stan.
My name is Mark and I still live locally. [It is interesting to note that another Mark, known as 'framesmith', has done a lot of research into the Warners in Loughborough; we must be related, but we are not the same person.....

I will post anything that I find as soon as possible, although my time for research is limited by work. However, it's great to know that this branch of the family is starting to discover more about its roots in Loughborough. Are we related to the Warners of Cartwright and Warner, Warner School, Quorn Hall or Nanpantan Hall fame?

Thanks for the reply and the new ideas and clues.  I made a mistake and posted my grandfather was George Warner b1830 to William warner and Catherine Bradford.  He was my gg grandfather.  My grandfather was Herbert Joseph H. Warner b1877 in Loughborough to George Warner b1830 and Elizabeth Hennessey b1838.  Herbert was one of 12 children.  He immigrated to the U.S.A. around 1894-1899. I'm a grandchild from Herbert's second marriage.  I am also looking for a child of Herbert who was born in 1920  in Jersey City NJ and taken to England about 1924 to 1928 by Herbert's Aunts after my grandmother died.
I also have been trying to connect William to other Warner families in Loughborough. The only possible connection I have is to Francis and Grace Wigley.  It gets a little complicated.  William and Catherine had a daughter Ellen b May 8,1824 and married Joseph Smith in Loughborough in 1846.  In the 1851 England Census Ellen and her husband Joseph was living in Longborough.  They had 2 visitors Francis John Oldner Warner and Jane Whitmore. The following year Jane and Francis were married on June 14, 1852.  Ellen's husband Joseph was a witness to their marriage.  Francis died in 1861 at an early age and is buried with his grandmother Grace Wigley and other family members in Welford Cemetery. Francis John Oldner was born in Basford.  Since Francis and his fiancé Jane was visiting Ellen and Ellen's husband Joseph was a witness to their wedding it suggests a possible family tie. I put this aside because I couldn't find further evidence so I have been concentrating on William and Catherine's other children. I am so happy to have found another family member looking into this!
