Ox & Bucks - WW1 - Greece
« on: Saturday 11 February 17 06:16 GMT (UK) »
I have a Major in Ox & Bucks who was awarded a Greek Military Cross (2nd class) - published 26 Nov 1919.

I have the following information (source unknown  :P )
"In October 1915 the British and French landed in Salonika at the request of the Greek Prime Minister. The British 26th Division -- including the 7th (Service) and 8th (Service) Battalions, Ox & Bucks -- landed between December 1915 and February 1916.

The Regiment's time in the Balkans was mostly quiet, experiencing sporadic fighting, but it included the repulsing of a Bulgarian invasion of Greece at Lake Doiran in April-May 1917.
"

Unfortunately none of that appears to be related to the time abt 1918/1919 when the Greek medal was won.

How can I find what regiment my man was with?
(I can't see it on his medal card)

Would there be a War Diary somewhere that might mention the 1919 time frame.

Appreciate any help or direct please

Cheers

Di

His name isMajor E F Medcalf- seems some docs say his name was Edgar Frederick, elsewhere it's Edward Frederic

I wasn't sure if I'd asked about this guy before - so apologies if I'm repeating myself

The War Cross (Greece) was confirmed by Royal Decree on 31st October 1917.
It was awarded to military personnel of all branches for acts of valour in the Macedonian Front (1916–1918), the Allied Expedition to the Ukraine (1919) and the Greco-Turkish War of 1919–1922.

Interesting that the wiki link talks about the "War Cross" whereas the Gazette has the award as "Greek Military Cross 2nd Class"

Are these the same thing?

Best guess is both Military Cross & War Cross are military decorations of Greece, awarded for heroism in wartime to both Greeks and foreign allies.

I can't find anything that mentions a Greek Military Cross?
Even here:

And, because of the date of 1919, I would have thought that the Allied Expedition looked a good bet for the action?

Di, you asked about his regiment. His medal card says "Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry".
