Hello,

Could you possibly post a picture of the relevant section of the birth cert?

RGA usually stands for Royal Garrison Artillery. There were many drivers in the RGA.

2nd Lancs would suggest the 2nd Lancashire Heavy Battery. The 1916 Army List has them at Wellington Barracks, Wellington Road, Wavertree, Liverpool.

It seems that the 1st and 2nd Lancashire Heavy Batteries formed the Lancashire Heavy Brigade.

You'll find this post the Great War Forum of interest:

There's an MIC for a Cornelius Francis O'Mahoney 26413 but he was a Gunner in the 15 Mountain Bty. RGA.
There's also a Cornelius Mahony 38233 also a Gunner in a Mountain Bty (2).
I can see he has a medal ribbon so must have gone overseas but can't see any others.
He appears to have the 14/15 Star ribbon the 2nd. man is the only one out of the 2 that has this.

Very interesting!

The medal roll of the Lancashire Heavy Brigade lists:

308124 Gunner Cornelius J F Mahoney

There's an MIC for the same chap.

Did drivers become gunners?

Just to confuse things further, there was also a 2nd line unit = 2/2nd Lancashire Heavy Battery

This is the signature of 308124 Driver C Mahoney for comparison with that of Cornelius Francis Mahoney (perhaps from the marriage certificate)

308124 Mahoney doesn't have the 14/15 Star unless he's been missed off the list.

The 2nd Lancashire Heavy Battery was part of the 42nd Division which was sent to Egypt in 1914.

See here http://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army/order-of-battle-of-divisions/42nd-east-lancashire-division/

A battery of four 4.7-inch guns,  it left the 42nd Division and moved independently to France, joining XVI Heavy Artillery Brigade RGA on 15 February 1916
