A Matross from Tilbury Fort got married in 1760

Seax D/P 41/1/4 Marriages at Chadwell St Mary. Images 15 & 16. Reg Nos 12,17 & 18. Three men are each described as a Matross if I have transcribed correctly. Several others are invalids from the fort, if that helps. What is a matross please?
