Charles Pain
« on: Saturday 11 February 17 16:13 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the parents of my great great grandfather Charles Pain, who, according to Census records was born in Chertsey, Surrey in 1817.  I haven't been able to find a record of his birth, and have been through the Parish record of births for Chertsey in the Surrey History Centre for years either side.

The only other information that I have is that his father was Robert Pain, a gardener and I got this from Charles' marrriage certificate. I have plenty of information on Charles marriage, children and his death, but it's so frustrating not to be able to go back very far!

Because I couldn't find a birth under Pain for 1817, I wondered if he had been illegitimate, then adopted and given the surname of Pain later, but I could only find one other Charles in 1817 and I have proved that it isn't him.

Does anyone have any ideas that I could try to find his birth or to find anything about his father with only his name please?!

Welcome to Rootschat, Jennifer.

I'm putting in a link to an old thread on another message board so that people can see the Collyer/Hawkins info and not duplicate the research on that possibility.

I'm afraid I'm not getting very far with this one.

The evidence suggests that Charles was probably born 1816 (aged 34 in April 1851, 84 in December 1900) rather than 1817 but that doesn't help much.

I spent some time looking at references to a Robert Pain born Kent circa 1793 who had a vegetable farm (Old Oak Farm) in Shepherds Bush in the 1840's but I haven't established his whereabouts circa 1815. Also there was a Robert Pain who was a licensed victualler in Egham in 1811.

Thanks so much Shaun for your time on this, it's a real mystery. I've been searching for several hours this morning for Charles Pain or just Pains born around that time and in the south with no luck. I'm asssuming, maybe wrongly that Robert Pain was alive at the time of Charles' marriage, or would he have been entered as deceased on the marriage certificate?

The vegetable farmer sounds interesting, and potentially could tie in with the marriage certificate timing.

My nan always said that Charles was born on the wrong side of the blanket and that his father paid for his education, but where that might have been, if true, I have no idea. It just gets more mysterious.
