Names on Elgin War Memorial
« on: Saturday 11 February 17 17:47 GMT (UK) »
On a visit to Elgin we took a photo of my husband's Gr. Uncles names on the war memorial in Elgin.

Unfortunately we seem to have missed one gr uncle as he was a sergeant.

Can anybody tell me if there is a web site I can access a photo of the names on the memorial.  The name I am interested in is Catto.  I have a photo of two brothers names but not the sergeant.
It might be a  wee while before I can get back up to Elgin so if anybody can help with accessing a photo it would be much appreciated.
Betty

"The Morayshire Roll of Honour", which is accessible on line, has 8 Cattos listed with biographical details.  Five of them are all the same family, parents James Catto and Isabella Stewart of 101 South St., Elgin.  How awful!

I see that there is a local heritage section in Elgin Library, which can't be that far from the War Memorial. They may have a photo of the names on the memorial or may be happy to take a photo for you as they are passing.

Contact details are as follows. It might be easiest to ring them after 10 tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice.

I may leave it until I can get up to Elgin.  I had just wondered if I could access a photo on line of the names.

Thanks for your time.
Betty

I found a site that listed the names on the Elgin War Memorial with two privates, brothers - D C and John Catto, I assume the two you have.  Under the higher ranks is a CSM (Company/Colour? Sergeant Major) James Catto.  According to the Morayshire Roll of Honour, all three are the sons of James Catto and Isabella Stewart.  However, the Morayshire Roll of Honour has two more sons to these parents - privates Albert Stewart Catto and Charles Catto.  All five brothers are involved in cabinet making or furniture in some shape or form.
https://archive.org/details/morayshirerollof1921mora

The 1901 census has James 36, cabinetmaker house furnisher, and Isabella Stewart 37 living at 61 South St. Elgin with the following children:
David C 15, Jessie 13, James 12, William G 10, John 8, Maggie 6, Charles 4, Albert S 2, Ernest 5 months.

Scotlands People have the following births:
David Cox Catto 1886
James Catto 1888
William George 1890
John Catto 1893
Charles 1897
Albert Stewart Catto 1898
Ernest Catto 1900
Albert Stewart 1898

What I don't understand is why all five brothers are not on the memorial or, if some survived the war, why they are on the roll of honour.

Thanks for the time you must have spent to get this information.

I have done a lot of research on this family and it is really only the photo of the plaque with sgt. Cattos name on it.

On a previous visit we took a photo of the plaque with two of the sons names unfortunately missing out on the other brother.

It would appear that the Moray roll of honour includes names of people who were involved in the war and survived.

I really appreciate your time.

No problem.  Sorry, I'm not in the area so can't help with the photo.  Good luck

Thanks for the link.  I have checked out this site a few times in the past.  Great work they are doing. I did find the names of the people on the memorial but not a photo of the name plaques.

Thanks for your time.
