Just to add a little bit to MaxD's excellent explanation the B'ham AV list goes beyond 1920 so if he was still in at that time he would be on it.

Thankyou everyone for your help. I did read the war diary and it seems that they returned in May 1919.

I've just received his marriage cert for 1917 and from what I can read it looks like RAMC again but I can't read what it says above this. I'm wondering if he was attached to a different unit at this time and if he was I'd like to read the war diary for this unit also.

1st (something) FA = Field Ambulance.  Better eyes than mine needed on the "something"

His name is John Robert Smith and he was married 3rd April 1917 in Birmingham.
