I'm intrigued when you say 'lets give up on this one'?

Clearly, from baptism, this is the same man although birthdate is one 1 year out.

Army records available on FindMyPast - he joined 1887 - 2446 Bedfordshire Regiment via (I think) 5th King's Royal Rifles.  He served in the Boer War, gaining both Queen's and King's medals plus Cape Colony, Wittebergen and Transvaal clasps. 
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Oh dear - is this young John in 1891 - Kerrison Reformatory School, Thorndon, Suffolk - RG12/1458 folio 147, page 2?

John Death aged 16 - Inmate of Reformatory - born Sheffield

And Ann in 1871 is born in the same place as Ann Death in 1881  ;)

I'm intrigued by your knowing James' date of birth, it must have come from somewhere.
