I see Whickham is near Gateshead, but some way off Pontop & Collierley (SW of Dipton).

He was living in Collierley Dykes in 1851, now known as Dipton. This is only about 5 miles from Sunniside (abode on burial register).

Whickham (i.e. where he was actually buried) about 6.5 miles from Dipton.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

We seem to be going round in circles, I didn't realise this had been done before.

But I like Mark's thinking here - no baptism for George Hood and none for this William H. There is a chance they could be siblings. I think it's worth trying to find out more about this place etc. Who knows what we may find :)

In that case maybe someone has already found this  ::)
Just for the record.
In the 1841 census William Hood, living in Dipton, states that both he and his wife were born in County Durham.

HO 107 / 301 / 7 / 7 /

Yep, dobfarm mentioned he was from Durham on the 1841 census, on the other thread.

Nice to see it in its entirety though  ;)

Possibly further evidence that the William Hood aged 71 in the 1851 Census at Collierley & Pontop [near Dipton], claiming his birth place Cunnagal Yorkshire, was probably born Carnigill Yorkshire (in border country), near the border with Co. Durham.

West Carnigill Farm is currently given Co. Durham, picture of the farmhouse and map here ...

Carnigill, Baldersdale, was North Riding of Yorkshire.

The IGI had no coverage after about 1772/1773 for Romaldkirk, despite Registers at DCRO continuing onward until 1963.

No IGI Coverage Romaldkirk, North Yorks?
Carnigill on Hunderthwaite Moor seems to come under the Parish of Romaldkirk North Riding of Yorkshire. However, no IGI after 1772 (C) / 1773 (Marr), although C.M.B. Registers 1578 to 1963, source Yorkshire Parish Registers by Colin Blanshard Withers.

Churches / Chapels on recent 1976 OS Pink (1:50 000 Series) Sheet 92 Barnard Castle & Richmond map:-
Romaldkirk; Cotherstone; and more distant Laithkirk; Lartington; Eggleston

If not online, any Hood/s baptised here are not going to show up.

Regards Mark
