1861 - which hospital
« on: Wednesday 15 February 17 17:19 GMT (UK) »
I would like to clarify a detail on the 1861 census, RGO9, 3589 / 13 p19.  Margaret Finningley, aged 69, is an almswoman in Chapel Lane, Hull.  That's as far as I can get using FS.  I assume she was living in one of the two almshouses or hospitals on Chapel Lane, but does the census image say whether it was Gee's or Harrison's?
Thanks
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

Looks like 'Foxes' to me...she is an 'almswoman to shoebonder'. Harrisons is immediately before it. 5 people in Foxes.

Harrisons hospital shows as the property immediately before Fox's - there are Almswoman listed in both.  The next listed property 5 Church Alley is occupied by a Brother Brothel keeper and a prostitute  ;)

Agreeed it's "Foxes".  Presumably it's Fox's Hospital.

There's a daybook at Hull History Centre http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/c/F90755

I think occupation is 'Almswoman for[merl]y shoebonder/bender. The 'y' of formerly is in superscript.

Interesting link, Shaun, about the history.

Just pasting an excerpt:
Harrison's Hospital, founded (in Chapel Lane) in 1550, for 10 old women. This was the first charitable foundation in Hull after the Reformation, and was instituted by John Harrison, alderman. To this hospital a Mrs. Fox subsequently added four rooms, for as many inmates.

that will teach me to try typing in the dark too lazy to move to turn on the light.  ::)
I'm not the only one to do that then...sometimes I fold the laptop screen down to give some light on the keyboard, then fold it up to see what I have [mis]typed ;D. At least evenings are getting longer now  ;D ;D
