Burns connection.

  JEAN /JANE BURNS DUNCAN 1848 – 1941
The middle name of Burns has been passed down through this family for generations, but where did it come from .
Jean / Jane Burns Duncan  is the daughter of William Duncan and Catherine Philips.
Catherine Philips baptism has not been found and there are no entries with her mother’s name, we only  know her father was Robert Philips a wright.

On 13 May 1844 William and Catherine  married  at St Cuthberts,  Edinburgh.  William Duncan and Catherine Philips Daughter of the late Robert Philips , wright in Dalkeith

We know that Robert Philips has died, these are the only two found in Midlothian from after Catherine was born, either could be her father.
There are no more details and both are before the 1841 census was taken so that is no help.
They could even be father and son
Robert Philip     Burial    17 May 1840  aged 41  bc 1799 South Leith, Midlothian.
Robert Philip   Burial     31 Jan 1841 aged 67 b c 1774 South Leith, Midlothian.

The only match with a Philips and a Burns is much earlier and really is clutching at straws.

Lawrence Philips.  Marriage Date:14 Mar 1762 Glasgow,Lanark,Scotland
Spouse:  Agnes Burns
 Baptism 29 Oct 1762 Agnes Philips.  Glasgow,Lanark,
Father: Lawrence Philips   Mother:  Agnes Burns

There seems to be no connection to Burns from the Duncan side

On 26 March 1803 John Duncan married Elizabeth Smith at Huntly, Aberdeen.
John Duncan died Drumblade   in 1855
From his death certificate John`s parents are named as James Duncan and Elpseth Duncan deceased maiden name Smith.
Their children are named as -
Arthur 52   b 1803
Elspeth 44  b 1811
Ann 44 b 1811
John died aged 4 in 1818
William 38 b 1817

WILLIAM DUNCAN 1817 – 1884
His parents are named as John  Duncan and Elpseth Duncan deceased maiden name Smith.
He was married to Elizabeth Duncan maiden name Smith, farmer’s daughter.
Elizabeth`s parents were William Smith and Margaret Fraser (death cert )

We`ve been through this before and come to a dead end.

Annie, Catherine Philips gave Dalkeith as her birth place in censuses between 1851 - 78. She died 1878.

Birth year 1820 +/- 3yrs. Age at death was given as 56 by her husband William Duncan...but he had blanked out on her parents' names for the death reporting  :-\
