James Draffin 78th Foot Discharge Record
« on: Thursday 16 February 17 04:18 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can make out what is written for James's Trade when he was discharged from the 78th Foot in 1865?
I had no idea that my great grandfather James Currie Draffan was in the Army at all.  Just stumbled across this yesterday when looking for someone else.    I think it must be him as he was born in Lesmahagow and in 1846.     I've looked for another James born there the same year, but cannot find another with same place and date of birth.
Odd too that he was only in the Army for a year.
So now I guess I should see who might have his Attestion Papers on record.

How on Earth does an 1865 record from a British Regiment turn up headed by Ancestry under United States Census 1930?    Something wrong with Ancestry files?

I can read 'smithing' at the end of the word on the second page and am wanting read 'black' before it....but cannot really. So something smithing. I cannot read the trade on the first page except it looks as if it begins with 'Hammer'. Looking again it might have 'engine' after the word that starts with H

PS in relation to your query about the record....well the Irish travelled everywhere and who is to say they did not do time travel as well! Lots of fairy folk there to help.

Thank you Shan.    James did grow up in a Steel town - Coatbridge and in 1871 had moved to Consett in England to work as a Puddler at the Iron Works.
I know a bit about the Wee Folk too.   Their King was call IUbdan which is rather odd because this is Egyptian and the IU prefix is the God Name abbreviation for Yah Weh, and is the origin of the name 'Jew'.    But there again I have found three Egyptian Kings in Irish Legend and all three have the YY god name prefix in the hieroglyph versions.

His record is on FindMyPast - he had epilepsy and was discharged because of this disability "not aggravated by vice or intemperance".  An entry for a trade on discharge is the trade a man intends or says he was going to take up.  In his case, as ShaunJ says, it is Hammerman, the same trade he had on entry.

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

Thank you for that Max.  This is another eye opener.    Malcolm
