I must point out that High Hesket and Whitehaven are at the opposite sides of Cumberland. It's true that there was an Edward MURPHY birth registered in Whitehaven in 1845, however his mother's maiden name was ADAIR.

This will be them in 1851 census, if you don't have it.

Whitesmiths Buildings, Hawkdale,
James Murphey, 52, Teacher of ??? (Could be Art and Mathematics?), b. Ireland,
Hannah ", wife, 45, b. Cumberland, Walton (?),
Christopher ", son, 8, b. Cumberland, Dalston,
Edward ", son, 5, b. Cumberland, Hesket in the Forest,
HO107/2431/321/1

And in 1841.

Lintongill, Ivegill, Dalston.
James Murphy, 40, Farmer, b. Ireland. (could be an S, but looks more like an I).
Hannah ", 35, b. Cumberland,
Ruth ", 10, b. Cumberland,
John ", 8, b. Cumberland,
William ", 3, b. Cumberland,
Frances ", 1, b. Cumberland,
HO107/164/23/5/4

Familysearch has his baptism 3 Aug 1845, Ivegill / Highhead, Edward Murphy son of James and Hannah. Doesn't seen to be a corresponding birth record on GRO, but registration was not compulsory. Some of the other Murphy/Walker siblings are on the GRO.

Alan.
Northumberland - Smith, Willis,
Durham - Rogerson, Child
Cumberland - Irving, Hill
North Yorkshire - Layfield,
Ireland - Collins

Yes that is my family. Thank for your input. It is really appreciated. I found all the Christenings:
Ruth-May 1831 (married Tom Slack)
Frances-Mar 1840
Christopher-Sept 1842
Edward Walker -Aug 1845 (married Mary Caroline Abbott)
James-birth-Dec 1847
I cannot, however, find out where James Murphy is from in Ireland and who his parents may be. The same is true for his wife Hannah Walker (according to her son John Walker Murphy's death certificate she was born in Scotland). Their son Edward Walker Murphy came to Canada-my gg grandfather. My trail starts with his birth 1845 in Whitehaven, Cumberland and his parents' names. DNA testing has not as yet helped me find my Murphy family either. I am putting a family book together for my 87 year old mother but I still have some gaps.
Thank you for your ongoing help. I appreciate it.

Geoff, where did you find James Murphy arithmetic teacher? I would love to know the source. It also quotes it in London, Ontario, Canada (Carlisle Records) where he died Nov 13, 1865. He was buried Nov 15, 1865 but I can’t find out where unfortunately. His wife Hannah and son Christopher then moved to Michigan, USA near another son John Walker Murphy ( farmer). My descendent ( son Edward Walker Murphy) moved to Penetang, Ontario, Canada to be a teacher in a boy’s reform school in Penetang, Ontario.
