Yes. I did see that one record states a Dec 1863 marriage and others a may 1864 marriage.
For me the other twidly bits that you have rooted out are exciting ..... The confirmation of the law connections seem to tie him to Wm Magrath (my focus) making John's citation of his address on marriage as Wm's meaningful , not just random.  Also it seems there is more to investigate in Dublin and Limerick.
Many thanks for your efforts.

A marriage registered in 1863 has to be COI, RC marriages were not registered at that stage.

So are we back to the two couples with the same names?

The Solicitor to Law Clerk has been bugging me. I don't understand law stuff much but would have thought a Solicitor was 'above' job wise to a Law Clerk.

Yes, a bit confusing. But then I think issues of class abounded. In many records they are all striving to be considered 'Esq' or 'Gentleman'.  A solicitor would have been a gentleman, but a solicitor's clerk or a law clerk, apparently may have been ' a gentleman in education and manners, but not necessarily'.  It could be he was apprenticed to a solicitor (need to check Kings Inn Admissions' when back to normal IT access.

Back with decent IT, have now gone through all your responses again. Many thanks.
There is the issue Dathai noted of a double record for the marriage - Dec 1863 and May 1864.  I will be visiting Dublin in May, so think perhaps the best I can do is check out the 1863 record to see if it is an issue of transcription/confusion of 2 John McGraths in the familysearch records.
Thanks once again for your efforts.

This may be the definitive answer as to what happened to  the John Fennell Magrath who married Mary Ellen Ryan in 1864 ….BUT can anyone find a death record please?

‘Magrath – Apr 19, at St Vincent’s Hospital, of congestion of the lungs, John, eldest son of the Late John Magrath, solicitor, Nenagh.’  Dublin Weekly Nation Apr 30th 1881.

To fill in – I discovered a John Magrath who married Helen Fennell at St Audoen’s, Dublin in 1809.  A John Fennell Magrath has a Kings Inns admission for 1833, and there is evidence of him practising in Dublin and Nenagh as a solicitor.

It seems this may be the father of my John Fennell Magrath of the 1864 marriage – he said his parents were John & Catherine, Limerick.  A death/burial/probate record might help solve what happened to him – but just cannot find one.  :'(
