There is an 1875 death in Birmingham aged 67 but I think that is the David Martin b South Wales and married to Winifred.  He can be traced back to the 1851 so not your David snr

David Martin married my GG Grandmother Sarah Preston (nee Taylor) in 1846 in Birmingham.

Marriage cert shows his father as John Martin occ bricklayer

1851 census has David as a Stamper, so this looks like it could be him re-marrying:

7 Dec 1851, St George's, Birmingham
David Martin, full age, Widower, Stamper of Pinett (?) Unett Street.  Father:  George Martin, Mariner
Mary Smith, Full Age, Widow of Great Russell Street. Father: William Bates, Nailer.
Witnesses: William & Louisa Mullings.  All four made their mark

There appears to have been another David Martin who was also a Stamper.   He married a Harriett (transcribed as Hannah on Ancestry but clearly Harriett) Meritt (??) 19/7/1824 Aston and they appear on 1841 Census with 4 children - he bc.1803.   He could be the David who married Mary Smith, widow, in 1851 and not 'your' man.   Just a thought.

Big difference in fathers details on the 2 marriages so I don't think the 1851 marriage is the same David

I agree that the father's details are very different but I don't think we can rule him out just yet.  My own Great Grandfather named two very different fathers on his two marriages, so it isn't unheard of.

In 1851 David & family are living at 19 Court 4 House Summer Lane, and at 18 Court 10 House Summer Lane is a Mary Smith, Widow, aged 30.

Having looked into it a bit further I think Annette & Carole are probably right & the 1851 marriage is a different David Martin.

The Harriet that was married to the 'other' David Martin, Stamper was convicted of theft in 1844 & transported for 14 years.  I can't find this David in 1851 but in 1861 there is a David Martin aged 62, Brass Stamper, living in Birmingham with wife Maria, aged 73 which may well be him.   In 1841 his age was given as 38, which ties in with the baptism in Birmingham of a David s/o George & Mary Martin.

Am I correct now in thinking that David Martin (husband of Sarah) first makes an appearance (as per any records we can find of him) - is when he marries Sarah in 1846, then we find him again on the 1851 census, then we lose trace of him.

CaroleW, can you give me details of the death you found in 1853 for David Martin aged 5. I would like to send for this death certificate and have looked on Free BMD but no age given so unsure if this is the same one.
