Please confirm dates of Maull & Fox Photographs Piccadilly
« on: Friday 17 February 17 09:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have joined 3 pics together only to compare the dates.
All pictures were taken by Maull & Fox at 187a Piccadilly
Plus they appear to have been using the same desk in all pictures.
 - Sorry I don't have the back
From what I understand there is a 20 year gap between at least 2 of them

Would anyone kindly confirm a rough date for each from their attire? - if possible please

Thanks

D

My, unprofessional, opinion is that the first picture is c.1905 and the other two were taken in the 1890s.

The last two jackets are almost identical.

There are a number of unfortunates here.
Unfortunately they are wearing formal attire which could cover about 1/2 Century.
Unfortunately Maull & Fox were at this address over a very long period from 1879 & into the 1920's.
Unfortunately they used this cardstock over a long period.
Without the benefit of seeing the backs it's going to be difficult.
Starting with the easiest one which is pic. 2 his name is Robert Stawell Ball. He was born in 1840 & if you think he looks about 50 would give you an idea when it was taken.
The only noticeable thing about him is that he has a separate buttonhole for his watch chain which is a fashion that arrived in the late 1880's.
The 1st. one is Philip Herbert Carpenter born 1852 died 1891 so looks like taken shortly before that.
Can't identify no. 3 but there's no reason to believe it wasn't taken at about the same time as the others which would be late 1880's - early 1890's.

Thanks LilyM - appreciate your thoughts

Thanks Jim - those dates are interesting.
My confusion was due to the reputed dates I had -:
Pic 1: taken abt 1885  (ie age 33..... born 1852 died 1891)
Pic 2: taken abt 1873  (ie age 33..... born 1840 died 1913)
Pic 3: taken abt 1889  (ie age 72..... born 1817 died 1896)

It all makes sense now if pic 2 was taken late 1880's as he looks to be 50+, not in his 30's

If all pictures were taken around the same time then that date must be late 1880 ... it's all so very logical when one has the facts  ;D

Many thanks for your knowledge and assistance
