Help with identifying uniform from Home Guards
« on: Friday 17 February 17 12:42 GMT (UK) »
Hello all I am doing a bit of family research and would really like a bit of information to go with this photo please.

This is a photo of my grandfather Gwilym Lloyd Owen. He was born in 1927 and I believe this photo might have been taken when he was in the home guards? I know its a long shot and the badge on the hat is not very clear but if anyone can help provide any information it would be lovely.

If it helps I believe he would have been living in North Wales / Bleanau Ffestiniog area at the time he enrolled.

Many thanks for looking

Hi, welcome to Rootschat, it actually looks a little bit like a Royal Welsh Fusiliers cap badge, I may be wrong but I'm certain someone will be along to offer advice.

Frank.

Added: Taking the angle of the photograph into account, what do you think?

I looked at this too Frank but dismissed it because in the photo the top part of the badge appears and more lozenge shaped, and smaller (even considering the angle) than the round bottom part of the badge, and it also seems to be more regular in shape ie no "spikey bits". But I may be wrong ...  ;)

I am now looking at non Welsh regiments ....

You could apply for his service records niajones. They will tell you everything you want to know.  :)

Somehow it looks a little more like this one:

The "bit on the top" looks smaller and more compact.

That does look like it could be a match! Thank you.
It would make sense as they seemed to recruit from North Wales too.
I am in the process of getting the service records too which will be lovely to see.  Thank you both for your help, and so fast!  This site is great!

I have been doing a little reading and apparently there was an "economy" version .... maybe slight variations?

Does the shirt and tie fit with Home Guard? It looks like his tunic should have been buttoned up. He looks quite casual and a bit "rock n roll".  ;)

I suppose you will find out for sure soon enough niajones when the service record arrives.  :)

Yes you could well be right about slight variations Ruskie, on another note (and not wanting to throw a spanner into the works  ::) ) I'm wondering if the chaps uniform is a bit to, shall we say, "Posh" for the Home Guard too, shirt tie and tunic, as opposed to the usual looking "Battle Dress" uniform of the Home Guard.

As you say, his service record may show more.
