Stockport Workhouse
« on: Friday 17 February 17 14:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi :)

Are there any records available for Stockport Workouse around 1882?

Ancestry have some death records from then but I wonder if there is anything else available anywhere else?

Thanks :)

The definitive website for workhouses is www.workhouses.org.uk.
The page for Stockport is:
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Stockport/

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, where it says that surviving records are at Stockport Archives, Central Library.
However, many records were destroyed during WW2

Thanks very much KGarrad :) not much hope then I guess and Stockport is a bit out of my day range travel. I wonder if anyone is planning a visit there? Where is the best place to ask?

Just checked the dates again and it doesn't look like they will have anything surviving :(

From memory, the surviving records for Stockport Workhouse are negligible but your best bet would be to drop an email to Stockport Heritage Library and ask. The census records will give you a breakdown of who was in there but only at ten year intervals. I did find a burial record recently which confirmed "abode" as "Union Stockport" so you might find some info. via a circuitous route if you're lucky.
