Do these parishes given on at a marriage and birth locations add up?
« on: Saturday 18 February 17 20:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to see if a Gretna Green record adds up for some relatives in my tree.

The marriage was in 1820, which fits date wise. The names also fit.

According to the Gretna Green record the groom was 'from the Parish of Cockermouth' and the bride was 'from the parish of (what I think says) Kirkandrews'.

From what I've learnt from the census information the Groom was born in Workington, Cumberland and the bride was born in Longtown, Cumberland.

So could that be them?

;D Doing my best, but frequently wrong ;D
:-* My thanks to everyone who helps me, you are all marvellous :-*

Workington and Kirkandrews are in Cumberland.   Workington would come under Cockermouth registration district. Kirkandrews would come under Longtown.

The marriage record will show where they lived at the time of marriage, not where they were born.

I don't think the registration districts were in place in 1820  :-\

Thank you Sandra and Little Nell.

That's really useful information. Given that, it does seem quite likely that it's them as all the details fit.

Thank you very much.

The poster referred to finding them on census so registration districts would be applicable then

Hi

Was this the irregular or runaway marriages in Gretna?  If so they could have been from a wide area and might well not have given accurate information.

Best wishes

Hi

My grandfathers family were from that area and they originate from Longtown and moved to Wigton/Workington area so it would be possible.

Hi

What kind of marriage record is it?

I associate Gretna most with Gretna Old Church.  Not sure if there's a Gretna Green parish, but the so called runaway marriages were performed by various self styled priests who were not really clergy in a few locations just over the border, many from a long distance and loads from Cumberland  There were regular coaches

Best wishes
