Illustrated family tree production tool?
« on: Sunday 19 February 17 19:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi there. Just wondered if anyone might be able to recommend a (preferably free!) tool or app that I could use to draw up a family tree diagram? My genealogy software can produce plenty of variations of these, but I'd like to output one as a jpeg and to have include some nice background artwork behind the 'boxes' of the tree, if you see what I mean, which my programme can't do. If anyone would be able to recommend something, I'd be most grateful. Thanks very much.

I use RootsMagic, and the wall chart option allows me to put an image as the background.

Maybe the free RootsMagic Essentials will do the same?
Or maybe not?! It's probably the type of "extra" you have to pay for?!

A bit late to the party but....

There are lots of ways to achieve this. For example, if you can output your chart to a jpeg (or screenshot it) you could edit in a paint program - resaving at as a .png and making the areas outside the boxes/lines transparent then pasting the resulting image over your background in a paint program (or vector editing program such as Inkscape).

Or, you could output to pdf and edit this directly in Inkscape, placing the entire contents over a background image of your choice.

Need more ideas...?
