Recommendations for easy free Family History programs please
« on: Sunday 19 February 17 22:31 GMT (UK) »
An elderly relative has a wonderful album of family photos covering several generations.

With the help of us family historians we now have names & dates for most of them

However, he has now asked for a copy of the family tree to "help him visualise who they are & how everyone is related"

I can send him a gedcom, no problem -- but what is the best programme to recommend to him to be able to read it?
I doubt very much he will take up active genealogy -- he just needs something simple to open up the tree

I use MyHeritage, it's free unless you want to pay to back up the tree on their servers and accepts and created GEDCOMs.

Tribal pages, it is free for up to 50 photos, if you want more then you will need to upgrade, and pay. It is reasonably priced.
It also will show photos in a photo tree if they are linked to a name ;http://royal.tribalpages.com/tribe/browse?userid=royal&view=18&pid=30&ver=47519

I use My Heritage as well on my computer. It is simple to use.

I also have a tree online using MH, but there is unfortunately a limit to the number of people you can add without a subscription.

Thanks for the suggestions :)

I have downloaded FamilyTree Builder from the My Heritage site --looks easy enough to use, so should suit my relative's purposes admirably!

I've never subscribed to MH since I prefer to have my own backups but from what I understand as long as you have all of your family tree stuff saved on your desktop as well as to their website then you should not lose anything. There are no limits on the number of people either if you don't back up to their website either.

I'd double check on their website though that you won't lose anything if you cancel the subscription, I don't want to be to blame for you losing all your research!

I use the free website for MH because it was easy to use and have photo's etc on it, the only drawback to that though as I said is the limit to the number of people you can have in your tree with out a sub.
