Falstone baptisms
« on: Monday 20 February 17 07:19 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the birth date of Elizabeth Armstrong 1827/1828. in the census her place of birth is Falstone and her marriage has her father as George Armstrong of Allenton (now called Alwinton). Has anyone any ideas how I can find her?

Welcome to Roots chat.

Because she stated Falstone as her place of birth it does not mean that she was baptised  there. She may not have even been born there  but it was the earliest place she remembered living.

Do you known her mother's name? It looks as if George Armstrong was quite a common name in the region. I see in 1941 a Jane Armstrong was in the household. Was that her mother or an aunt?

The baptism records of  St Peters, Falstone, are held by the Northumberland  Archives Service. Try contacting them.

You do not say which census states she was born in Falstone. It cannot be the 1841 census as that does not give birth places. Also you did not say who she married so hard to follow from that angle.

However a tree on a well known website says her father was George Armstrong 1805-1882. He married twice first to Eleanor Nichol 1799-1834 and then to Jane Elliot 1819-1902. So if this is the right family then Elizabeth's mother is Eleanor Nichol. The site also says Elizabeth was born 02 Sept 1827 at Falstone (but maybe this is a baptismal date you would have to see the record. It is not in the few BT records for Falstone on familysearch)
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Welcome to Rootschat.

Is this her in 1841 Census?

Falstone, Northumberland
George Armstrong, 37, Shepherd
Elizabeth Armstrong, 13
Thomas Armstrong, 12
Robert Armstrong, 10
Frances Armstrong, 8
Jane, 34, F/S
So looks like George is Widowed as by 1851 he has remarried.

I cant find any Baptisms for Georges Children to confirm his Wifes christian name on on-line sites.

I think Jane in 1841 Census is his Sister or other relation;

JANE Armstrong
Baptised 19 Jul 1807,  Presbyterian, Falstone, Northumberland
Parents THOMAS/JANE
(Anc.)

Marriage Reg Dec 1843, Bellingham, 25 265
Jane ELLIOTT and George ARMSTRONG on same page

EDIT;

Yes Jane in 1841 is his Sister.

GEORGE Armstrong Christened 4 Oct 1803, Presbyterian, Falstone, Northumberland
Birth 25 Aug 1803
Parents THOMAS/JONE
(Familysearch.Org)

I see George died in Roxburghshire.

Did any of his Children born from his 1st Marriage, ie ones born before 1841, end up in Scotland and Marry/Die there?

If so their Scottish Certs should name their Mother.

Trish :)

GRO Index  has a Burial Reg 1845 Bellingham for THOMAS Armstrong 1845 age 68

1841 in Falstone we have;
Thomas Hrmolois, 65, Shepherd, born Scotland
Jane Hrmolois, 65
Elisabeth Hrmolois, 30
Thomas Scott, 1
All others born Northumberland

So looks like right Family as Elizabeth 1810 is with them. Image is ARMSTRONG

It seems that the baptism could be at either Falstone St. Peter's or Presbyterian.  Fortunately both are at Northumberland Archives so, if you can wait till Wednesday, I can look at them both for you.

The baptism was at Falstone Presbyterian.  It says

"Elizabeth daughter of John and Mary Armstrong at Craig in the parish of Greystead and county of Northumberland was born on 13th Febraury and baptised on 29th April 1827"
