Colney Hatch asylum and the 1871 census
« on: Monday 20 February 17 08:38 GMT (UK) »
My relative was sent from the Liverpool Road workhouse to Colney Hatch in 1863. Her husband's entry on the 1871 census has him as married but I cant find her, nor can I find a death.

Does anyone know how to access Colney Hatch in 1871 so I can check names?

Many thanks

Starts  RG10; Piece: 1334; Folio: 112 Page: 1 onwards, this folio has 87 pages

It covers a lot of folios and pages, you might need to scroll the whole lot, patients are only listed by initials

Try just the surname and place of birth if you think the person is a patient

Good Luck

Thanks for that, thought it might be just initials.

Many thanks Louisa Maud, I think I've found her. Right initials, age, married, no occupation. It all fits.

Her husband is still down as married on the 1881 census so if you have the references for that too I would be most grateful.

As the "lunatics" are only known by their initials, were their deaths registered that way?

If she died in Colney Hatch or another asylum the date of death should be given on ancestry in
UK, Lunacy Patients Admission Registers, 1846-1912

Ancestry also has for Islington -
Orders for reception and conveyance of pauper lunatics, 1863

The admission register that jonw65 has very little info (well, the entry for my rellies did anyway).
The actual patient records are held at the LMA and are not online. They have more background info.
