I've just posted this image (from the online NLI RC parish registers) in another topic "Child Joannem in baptism register -boy or girl?" here http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=765574.msg6175433#msg6175433 but I think the question deserves a separate topic.

There's a + at the start and end of this line, circled in red. I was having trouble finding a matching civil birth record, and then the thought struck me.

Most roots researched back to the early/mid 1800s. Years noted as 'pre' refer to my direct ancestors, although I'm interested in any relatives:
Mitchelstown, Co.Cork: CORBETT (pre1935), SWEENEY  (pre1935), CUSACK? (pre1894), KEYS? (pre1894)
Mallow, Co.Cork: BROWNE (1895-1935)
Caher, Co.Tipp: BROWNE (pre1895), PURTELL(pre1895)
Cashel, Co.Tipp: FANNING (pre1886)
Llanelly, Carms: GRIFFITHS (pre1934), REYNOLDS (pre1901), WILLIAMS (pre1934)
Ton Pentre, Glams: LEWIS (pre1901)

Thanks to dathai's comment on the another topic here http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=765425.msg6176283#msg6176283 it seems that a cross beside the child's name could indeed indicate that the child died soon after birth. Dathai's comment:

"see last paragraph ''Other information'' near bottom of page
http://www.understandingyourancestors.com/ar/parishbirth.aspx"

"...For example, if the child died soon after birth, some pastors included the death date next to the record. Some pastors put a cross beside the child’s name to indicate that the child died..."

Of course that doesn't mean it's 100% certain that the + at the start/end of the entry I'm interested in mean that John/Joanna died, but I think that's now the most likely conclusion.
