I read it as C. The rest of the letter might have been a trail of ink. Was surname definitely Purtill?

Definitely a P for me.   If you look on the left hand page the sponsor for the 4th entry is Philip & the P is the same.

The person who is writing the register is missing much out. The line reads:
"Catt (daughter? of) Thomas Curtil (&) Ellen Nanby (abode) Kerry St."
The mother's maiden name could be Nanly

Hello -

I'd be very surprised if it were anything other than Patt.

His Cs and Ps are almost the same, think we all agree on that.
Personally I think there is a fine line on his Ps that isn't on his Cs.
So I go with Patt, but it would be good to see if he uses Patt as short for Patrick in other places, I did notice he used Con for Cornileus.

There are several different hands on these pages, so comparisons aren't much to the point. It might be worth checking over several pages to see if this hand is used again or the family have other children which would fix the surname

Having looked at lots of these, I'd go with Patt.

'Patt' from me too. The oddly written 'P' is also there in the surname which I assume is Purtel or Purtil.

If you look to the top of the same page, there is a Carey surname and also a child Patrick with surname Daniel.

I read it as "Catt" or "Cath", short for Catherine. See the capital letter "C" in the bottom line

Steve

That's what I see too.
