Probate for Eliza Stearman who died 18 May 1914 - probate date 13 July 1914

So it looks the family returned to England after Dennis died. That were I was going wrong becouse many of the same Stearman family stayed in Canada. Thanks for the help.

The link that RunKitty posted for the 1881 census shows Eliza lived on West Street, Harwich, so the following may be of some interest to you:

There is a newspaper article from the Essex Standard dated 12 Sept 1877 of a coroner's inquest into a man found dead on a beach.  Eliza Stearman, widow, was called as a witness as she was running a boarding house at 55 West Street, Harwich and the deceased had been staying with her.  He had been staying there several weeks, but she did state he had also stayed with her the prior year.

That would put her back in England at least by 1876.
