Stanfield family, St. Helier, Jersey
« on: Tuesday 21 February 17 11:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I'm tracking the family of James Stanfield and Ann Murray and the trail has led me here.
I have discovered that they had two daughters:
  • Rachel, baptised - and presumably born - in St. Helier on 26th May 1824.
  • Ann, baptised - also presumably born - in St. Helier on 22nd December 1824.
The same search has also turned up an Elizabeth (Elisabeth on Ancestry, but I know it's a 'z' in the image) Stanfield who died of convulsions and was buried at St. Helier Parish Church on 25th November 1847. Now I am jumping to conclusions a little here as she would have the same birth year as the other two girls but it's a great coincidence. The major problem is that I can't find a suitable birth or baptism for her, which is concerning since James and Ann clearly managed to baptise the other two. I'm not certain that she was born in Jersey, not by any stretch, but as the two others were born there in 1824 it would make sense.

There is another Elisabeth born in Barnsley in 1824 to parents with the right names, but the father's occupation is 'Weaver' and that is 100% wrong. My James Stanfield was a military man, a Gunner in the Royal Artillery between 1805 and 1827, so I'm guessing that he was stationed on Jersey around 1824, but I can't prove that yet either.

Can anybody help me with a baptism for Elizabeth, please? And, where would she turn up in a census? Did Jersey have their own censuses? The censuses 'down south' on the mainland feature an Eliz(s)abeth daughter of William Stanfield and another is daughter of Phoebe Stanfield, so most definitely not my girl.

All contributions greatly appreciated, thanks,
MT ;)

Seems unlikely they were sisters if born only 7 months apart  :-\  Depends how old they were when baptised.

According to the image the Elizabeth Stanfield who died in Nov 1847 was 23 years old.

The Jersey censuses are the same as the English ones and run from 1841 through to 1911.

Yes, already managed to trace both Rachel and Ann through the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census, so no issue there.
Thanks for taking the trouble to spot her though.

As for them not being sisters, I also considered the fact that May and December are only 7 months apart but, as Milliepede said, they were probably born 9 months apart and the baptisms were delayed.

And yes, I knew that Elizabeth was 23 when she died, which was why I was able to calculate a probable birthdate of 1824. But where is she in 1841 then? Hmmm ...

Ok, already typed this iup so will leave it for others in the future.

Rachel STANFIELD, Father JAMES, Occp Warder, married William ROSS, Sarjeant Royal Artillery, 26 Jun 1857, St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich.

Although the Census says Rachel/George are born in Kent, I think this may be the Family in 1841.

1841 Census
Charlton Next Woolwich, Kent
Ann Stanfield, 40, born Scotland
Rachel Stanfield, 15
George Stanfield, 10

Indeed it is! :D
George Alexander Stanfield was born 6th Nov 1829 at Hill Street, Woolwich, Greenwich and baptised at St. Mary Magdalene, Woolwich on the 22nd.
Rachel we have already dealt with but, for the sake of completeness - and sanity! - it's worth noting that she tries to throw us off the scent quite regularly! In 1841 she was born "in county (Kent)"; in 1851 in Jersey; in 1861 in Guernsey! She dies in Toronto, Canada in 1866, wife of Sgt-Major William Swanson Ross, my g-g-g-grandfather.

I can't see any baptism records in Jersey for an Elizabeth and no mention of Stanfields until much later on the Archive site.

In theory then Elizabeth should be in Jersey 1841 census - maybe.  Could be at 23 she was a married lady so not born Stanfield although it doesn't say wife  :-\
