Memororal Birkenhead
« on: Wednesday 22 February 17 11:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Wonder if you can help , I found a 1914-1918  memororal in Flaybrick Cemetery Birkenhead Cheshire .

                           52674 Pte T C Challinor.
                              Cheshire Regiment
                                 25/4/21

I would like to find out if he was related to my family but cannot find any records of him on Ancestry if I could see his records then maybe look at his next of kin and then census records.

                                                            many thanks

According to Commonwealth War Graves Commission he was Thomas Charles Challinor.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Awarded Silver War Badge No: 159,400 - enlisted 29.11.1915, discharged 14.4.1917.  Reason:  Paragraph 392 XVI Sickness.  He had served overseas.

This is his death:
Jun 1921
Challinor  Thomas C  28  Chester  8a 427

There's a possible marriage but no middle initial:
Sep 1912
Challinor  Thomas  Mead Florence Birkenhead  8a 1309
He was originally 4263 Challinor & he served in the 11th. Batt.

1901:
He looks like this one living with Grandfather in Birkenhead;
Charles Birde  60
William Birde  24
Mary Ann Rendall  20
James Bird  19
Edwin Bird  17
Thomas Challinor  8
Any of these ring any bells ?

We're not allowed to give 1911 info, however his parents are Thomas & Elizabeth nee Bird.

Soldiers' Effects register has :
Sister Elizabeth Williams inheriting his effects (and 10 shillings to the undertaker Caldecott).

His gratuity is split.  Parts go to:
Brother Joseph
Sister Beatrice Upham
Sister El... (unreadable)
Sister Jessie
and Elizabeth Williams
There is a cause of death given which I should give you privately I think.  PM on the way.

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

Sister El... (unreadable) = Elsie according to that census.
I have to say I did wonder about the death date of 25/4/21 & the death registration at that time.
He was buried under his 5 digit no. so didn't rejoin post war which begs the question why the 1921 death registration if he died in 1917.
Am I missing something.
OK seems I am. A War Gratuity could be awarded in these circumstances even though still living.
