Hogg and Strain confusion
« on: Wednesday 22 February 17 20:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
I came across this exert from one of the graveyard links on here just now and it's confused my tree
It's in the Shankhill Graveyard - 1830-1930
and it says...
'Hogg Erected by Samuel Hogg in memory of his wife Susanna Hogg, died 18 May 1869 aged 71 years. Also his grand child Samuel H. Strain died 02 Jan 1869 aged 7 years. Also the above Samuel Hogg, died 31 May 1888 aged 86 years.'

I have on my tree that Theophilus Hogg married Eliza Strain in 1870 and they had a son Samuel Hogg that same year, do you think all of these Hoggs and Strains might be connected, I can't get my head around it.  ???

Theophilus Hogg married Eliza Strain in 1870... so is it on Civil Reg??  See who he was son of....

Theophilus' dad was John Hogg, noted on the wedding certificate to Eliza Strain

Seems quite straight-forward.

David Strain married (1860 Belfast) Maria Hogg, daughter of Samuel Hogg-

daughter Mary (1865) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FPW9-CLM
son David Herbison (1868) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FPHQ-6QL
son Samuel Hamilton (1869) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FP6L-3VV
twin Robert George (1869) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FP6L-3VL
son Samuel Hamilton (1874) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FR3G-2LB
could be others (such as Samuel H. died 1869) who were born before civil registration of births started in 1864.

Hello aghadowey,
So do you think all those that you listed are related to me?
I was confused because Theo married a woman called Strain, I don't understand the link between him/her and these people you listed unfortunately, I'm sorry. :(

The Strains may or may not be connected (Eliza's father James Strain was a farmer & David's father was Hamilton Strain) so you'll need to do a bit more digging to find or rule out a connection. However, they were certainly connected through the Hogg family.

Will of David H. Strain mentions wife Maria, sons William John & samuek & daughter Mary Rutherford.

Thanks Aghadowey - I wasn't really that interested in doing a full family tree, but the more I look (and learn) the more interested I am, it's probably a stupid question but is there somewhere on the group that gives a working plan of how to structure everything to put into a tree or is it a case of scribbling down notes?

There are lots of ways to record a family tree & a whole board on Rootschat dedicated to that sort of thing so have a look-
