Richard Leeke
« on: Thursday 23 February 17 13:41 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me with this please.
Richard Leeke born about 1813 Baltimore, father was also Richard and a shipwright.
I have young Richard (widower) in Toxteth Park (Liverpool) England in 1871 Census as a Time Keeper. His name misspelt as Luke.
24 Dec 1871 he married Eliza Kirk a widower.
They appear on the 1881 Census in Toxteth Park.
Sometime between 1881 and 13 Nov 1883 Richard went ahead of his wife and step daughter too Luling, Texas.
Richard Leeke had taken position as Immigration & Locating Agent for the Galveston-Harrisburg & San Antonio Railway. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, if you need to ask me for more information please ask. Thank you again .

Hi Ambly,
I would like to know as many things about him, his wife and step daughter please.
When did he arrive from Liverpool to his new work position.
Any info on abodes, when he and wife died.
Do they appear on any census forms
I do know the step daughter Margaret Kirk died in 1934 in Luling, Texas a spinster.
This address was given to her sister Jane back in England,  Margaret Kirk Immigration & Locating Agent for the Galveston-Harrisburg & San Antonio Railway.
Any help to put meat on the bone so to speak.
Many thanks if you or anyone can help in this matter.

Lancashire BMD
http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/cgi/marrind.cgi
Shows  Richard and Eliza married 1871 in Toxteth Park, St John the Baptist.
Her maiden name appears to be MILLS.

Ahhh......Richard so it looks like Richard's birth year is wobbly?
Rather the two UK Census has him born either c 1813 or c1822

1871: at 8 Miller Street, Toxteth Park, Lancashire
RG10 -  Piece 3806 -  Folio: 15 -  Page 22
Head: Mary A BAKER 57, widow, b Great Dunmow Essex
Dau: Elizabeth SWIFT 26, unm, Dressmaker, b Limehouse, Middlesex
Lodger: Richard LEEKE 58, widower, Timekeeper, b Baltimore, America US.

1881: at 108 Northumberland Street, Toxteth Park
RG11 - Piece: 3641 - Folio: 74 - Page: 8
Head: Richard LEEKE 59, Shipping Agent, b United States
Wife: Eliza LEEKE 55, b Ireland
Son: Samuel KIRK 27, unm, Railway Worker, b Liverpool
Dau: Margaret KIRK 16, Scholar, b Liverpool
Visitor: Sarah Jane WYLIE 28, unm, Milliner, b Ireland

I see Eliza also had a son, Samuel, and you mention there being another daughter, Jane.
Do you already have Eliza's backstory (her previous marriage, birth, all her children)?

Do you have the names of her parents (may be useful if promising America records appear where there are parents names to match to).

How old did both Richard and Eliza declare themselves to be at their marriage?

Cheers

Hi,

Nice work Ambly. ;D

Unfortunately the 1890 USA census was destroyed by a fire.

Daughter Margaret seems to stay with the Pinchin family from 1900 on. Does suggest that
Richard and Elizabeth died prior to 1900.

1910 as Kirk Margaret

1900 as Maysette Kirk

Cheers,

Hi Dbree,

Whoops I edited my post - and added in the other census 1900 and 1910 that you also have found  and posted about while I was editing ;D

Elizabeth PINCHIN, died 1938 in Luling
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K3MH-VMZ

I found it intriguing that her middle name is given as Luke. The very name Richard LEEKE was  transcribed as being in the 2 UK census  ;D (as transcribed, but he was enumerated correctly, handwriting hard to read).

If not for your great 1900 will / probate find - I might have been casting eyes on Richard & Elizabeth PINCHIN to see if they were masquerading Richard & Eliza LEEK  ;D

Cheers
