Thank you for your continuing help and for all the suggestions; I'll try to follow them up.

I have also been considering the other possibility: his whole life was invented in c1939 (his first appearance in the newspapers) to make him more interesting as an artist, although I hope that isn't the case. There is no evidence of Nicholas I having a grandson called Mickaelovitch with a daughter called Nina Maria; I can't find evidence of a Carlo del Renzio being assassinated in 1937; etc. I hope one of the universities comes up with something, or we can track down his mother.
