Hi

My dad was at Monte Casino in 1944 with the West Kent Regiment and then transferred to the REME.  I have his service records but they don't say where he was with the REME HQ No 1 Advanced Base workshop. Does anyone know where I can obtain this information please.

Forgive what looks like a rude question but are there no entries such as "(number) LAD" or "Wksp" or Tech Svcs in his record anywhere?  There may be unit designations that are REME without saying so.

Got it.  I can find war diaries for 1942 and 1943 and 1945 but not for 1944.  What were his dates at the wksp?

Sorry for the delay- had to go through all the documents.  He joined on 9th June, 1944 then it looks as if he went to No. 8 central workshop until his release on 22 November 1946.

OK.  My line of thought is that the unit war diaries will say where the units were at the relevent dates but as said, I can't identify a 1944 diary for 1 Base Wksp in any variation of its title or 8 Central Workshop (plenty of Central Wksps but not 8!).  Need to do some more digging.

Thanks very much Max, your efforts are very much appreciated.  I'm busy at the moment trying to find war diaries for the 6th Bat QORWK.  I know the places he went to (Tunisia, Sicily, and Monte Casino) but I thought a bit more information would be nice.
