Mary Pope Born January 1809 Coldridge, Devon, U.K
« on: Friday 24 February 17 21:00 GMT (UK) »
Looking for my 2nd great aunt Mary Pope B 1809

She was baptized January 31, 1809 Coldridge, Devon, U.K

Parents were

Thomas Pope  1784–1847

Grace Handcock 1782–1867

Both parents passed in Devon, UK

Mary married a John Hunt in October 1832 in Devon, possibly Ashringy  He was a widower and she was a spinster.  Believe her uncle John Handcock was a witness.

Mary and John Hunt came to Canada around 1850-51.  A possible match in 1851 census has too many children.

We believe they lived in or around Dorchester, Ontario.

Their daughter Grace was born OCTOBER 11,1833  Ashreigney, Devon, England and her grave marker shows her as originally from Devon, as was her husband, John Bickley.  They are buried in Dorchester.

Sadly we cannot find a death for either Mary Pope or John Hunt.  Additionally, there seems to have been several Hunt families in the area in the 1850-1900 era.

Dunbar, Clark,Bain, Lipp, Campbell, Pope, Barnard, Handcock, McAdams,Creath

Thomas Hunt, son of John Hunt and Mary Pope died 5 Jun 1924 in Bear Lake, Manistee County, Michigan. His birthday is listed as 10 Feb and he was 89 years, 3 months, 25 days old when he died. It gives his wife's name as Elizabeth. It indicates he was to be buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Minnesota.

Thanks for the replies.  Some of the above matches what we have but some is different.

We had the Dickey connection and have visited the Dorchester Union cemetery to photograph the marker

One item that has been confusing is the use of Mary Jane as the name for Mary Pope/Hunt.  We don't find that in England records (so far) but given the daughter is Mary Jane, that makes sense.  Having the name as Mary Jane Hunt and John Hunt in North Dorchester makes the census document easier.  AS I mentioned, there were a few Hunts in the area.

We will revisit the info we have and head back to England for some possible births there.  More births in England makes sense and when confirmed will make using the Canada census easier. It appears I may be missing some children or have the "wrong" children.

Parents JOHN/MARY Hunt
ANN 3 Dec 1837
SAMUEL 7 April 1839

Now something is strange as new GRO Index has no corresponding Birth Reg for Samuel/Robert with Mothers mn Pope.

Or am I going crazy?

Here's a link to a marriage for Henry Hunt to Margaret Dundas in North Dorchester in 1871. Henry's parents are listed as John and Mary Jane Hunt.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:9Q97-Y395-JZ2?mode=g&i=420&cc=1784216

There are in London East, Middlesex County, Ontario on the 1881 Canada census with a daughter named Mary Mabel Hunt and son named Harry Dundas Hunt.
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e328/e008199620.pdf

In 1901 they are in Lacombe, Alberta with Mabel M. and Blanche Hunt.
http://data2.collectionscanada.ca/1901/z/z004/pdf/z000178818.pdf

On the 1906 census for Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, Henry and Margaret have a granddaughter named Celia with them.
http://data2.collectionscanada.ca/e/e049/e001214091.pdf

On the 1916 census for Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, Henry and Margaret are in Red Deer, Alberta.
http://data2.collectionscanada.ca/006003/t-21953/pdf/31228_4363982-01068.pdf

On the 1921 Canada census, Henry and Margaret are in Stettler, Alberta.

I'm still looking for them on the 1891  and 1911 census.

There is a border crossing document for Henry and Margaret from Jan 1913 indicating they crossed the border into the US at Eastport, Idaho. They indicate they are going to visit their daughter Mrs. Tice in California. They list their nearest relative in Canada as their daughter Mrs. William Dunlap in Stettler.

Mabel Tice is in Monrovia, Los Angeles, California on the 1920 US census. She is listed as a widow and has a daughter named Cecilia (17). Mabel, Cecilia and Mabel's husband Joseph N. Tice are in Red Deer on the 1911 Canada census.

Here is the death for young Harry who died at age 11 months:

Here is a death for Blanche Dundas Dunlap in Vancouver:
