Would the baptisms of his children have his occupation?!

bitzar.

It is worth checking though I am not sure if occupation or abode are given at this time. There are some London baptisms on Ancestry.... you might get lucky.

OK... Christian's son John HANSON b. 1797 was also a Mathematical Instrument Maker so it's looking like the convict Christian maybe another man.

Issue are:

Christian HANSON 1790
Joseph HANSON 1792
Richard HANSON 1793
Christian HANSON 1795
John HANSON 1797
William HANSON 1799
William James HANSON 1801.

It is looking that way bitzar. Instrument making was very specialised, and though some instruments would be used by Mariners, (so a bit of 'cross over') it is not likely that an instrument maker would need to steal any carpets.

There may be apprenticeship records if the instrument makers are your family.

I never knew what Christian also made Instruments until just now.  I have done some research into his son John who was a Mathematical Instrument Maker.  It seems be made Barometers but on the baptisms of some of his children it states he was an 'optician' so he could of also made optical instruments.

Now to find the correct Christian.

Thanks all.

The only possibility that I can see is a Countess of Huntingdon NC record for a Christiana Hanson, age 54, of St Lukes, on 9 May 1819.

Seeing St Lukes is mentioned this may be Christian rather than Christiana, there is no sex given and the record definitely says Christiana?
