Any Ecclesfield Specialists? Woolling/Woollin/Woollen Surname
« on: Saturday 25 February 17 11:02 GMT (UK) »
I have a parish record from Sheffield Parish Church of a marriage between a W'm Woolling & Sarah Hobson in 1713. William's parish is given as Ecclesfield and I have been unable to discover anymore about him. I know Ecclesfield is a huge parish and the spelling of my family name is most definitely a moveable feast in the parish records. Can anyone enlighten me at all of William?

So I discovered a William Woolen born 1692 in High Bradfield. It's a new avenue to investigate.

Bradfield St Nicholas was a chapel of ease to Ecclesfield St Mary until 1868 when it became a separate parish.

Ahh, so in the time period I'm looking at (early 18thC) someone born and baptised in High Bradfield would have been classed as from the parish of Ecclesfield. That was one of the things I was unsure about.

In case you weren't aware, the Bradfield registers for 1559-1722 were transcribed and printed in 1905, and can be downloaded from the internet.

I downloaded a pdf of it the other day. It's quite frustrating. I have an annoying single generation gap in the 1720's that's fast turning into an impenetrable brick wall.

Sheffield indexers have transcribed 1723-1743 and they are available online at www.sheffieldindexers.com

I know there was a problem with the registers being unreadable around 1720.

I still keep looking on all the different sites again and again but with no luck. I'm looking for the baptism of a William Woolin (or any of those alternate spellings) who marries in 1747. I'm presuming a birthdate of 1725 give or take a few years either side.

I have the Ecclesfield St Mary baptism transcription and this is the only one I could find close to the given date.
