Jane STONE - bd Cuckfield 15 May 1879 aged 67.

Can anyone tell me more about this woman?!

I think I found her on the 1871 at The Market Place, Cuckfield. 
Jane STONE, widow, a butcher employing 1 boy (yeah I know right), aged 58, born Polsom Somersetshire.  Polsom I assume is Polsham!

I want her to be my Jane but what was she doing in Sussex?!?!  Everything else kind of fit's.  The Butcher part is VERY interesting as her husband was a butcher but he died pre 1851 and her brother's were also butchers.

I've just seen that Cuckfield burials are online and VERY coincidentally after I found Jane's entry I thought I'd just check the next page where I saw a Frederick FRY..... Jane's brother.  They are buried together so she is MY Jane.

Any other info will be still kindly appreciated.

So Fry was her maiden name?  When did she marry Mr Stone?

Frederick Fry is a farmer in Hastings in 1861 - via Clerkenwell, where his children were born. he dies in 1880, as yuo know, but can;t find him yet on 1871

Just so that you look at the right map for the address she is actually in the parish of St Wilfrid's, Haywards Heath.    That came under Cuckfield district at that time and was a rapidly expanding town with the advent of the railway.    Cuckfield refused to have it!
If you contact Cuckfield Museum they may be able to tell you if there is a headstone.

Everything you have replied with is correct.

Still looking for Elizabeth FRY, Frederick's wife on the 1871.  She was born Bath c1814.

I fairly much have Jane FRY all sorted.  FRY is a very Somerset name and Jane belongs to them.  STONE is also very Somerset.  There are LOTS of them, lol.

Why would Jane go to Haywards Heath?!  I know that Frederick was in Sussex but HH is not near Hastings.  On the 1781 Jane was alone, and a Butcher... seems unusual to up and leave Somerset.  Anywho, perhaps we will never know.  But, I do think I would liked to have known Jane STONE.  Her husband had died in 1850 and on the 1851 she and one of her sons were with a Master Butcher, I assumed her son was learning the trade.  Her husband was a butcher as well as her brothers.  Her other children were divided amongst family.  By the 1861 her trained butcher son was in Australia and she was back with her children.  And the 1871 we now know.... Seems she was also learning the trade.
