Hoping someone can help decipher this please - an excerpt from a Scottish birth register - Inverness-shire.

Could the first word after Riddle be Nephew?? Then possibly Gavin??

I think that John could possibly have been a Shepherd.

I can read that it says ' of John Riddle Shepherd...'

And then I think it's a place name, broken into two. Having looked up some old place names in Inverness, I wondered if it was 'Garaidh Ghualaich' which may have been in Kilmonivaig. I also read the name 'Garrygualach' somewhere online.

And then there's something like 'vof' at the end of the entry, which some of the other births have too.

I had wondered if anyone recognised the place names, or knew what 'vof' meant.

The bit at the end is "& of". The name of the final witness has not been entered.

Not sure that & of would necessarily be another witness. As John Riddle was the parent could it be:

of John Riddle shepherd <place name > & of <mother of child/wife od John Riddle>

ScotlandsPlaces has Garrygualach as a place in the parish of Kilmonivag, as you suggest.

Which parish is the entry from?

Just looked at the entry and I think you're correct about the place name. Also, I see that most of the other entries on the page are in the form of

of <father's name> <place name> and of <mother's name>

However, no gender or name of child is written in

The birth entry was from Kilmonivaig parish, which made it likely to me that the writing said Garrygualach or Garaidh Ghualaich.

There were two or possibly three children in the Riddle family born in Inverness-shire, according to the 1851 census. Helen born about 1823-6 in Stratherrick, and Thomas born about 1829 in Glengarry (which I think was part of Kilmonivaig parish). Also a Walter born about 1825 in Inverness-shire whose death (like Helen's) I can't locate. Only an 1845 gravestone.

The transcript of this birth record said the child born in 1826 was a male, but like you I couldn't see that at all.

I wonder if Stratherrick is anywhere near or within Kilmonivaig?
