A  divorce would be unlikely at the time - maybe they just separated

At least you found him in 1895 which is good.  Which industrial school was he at??

The record book at the Mitchell Library gives the last entry for Joseph  for 1895 - Back to Industrial School - no mention of the School name.

Have been on the GRO  webpage and there is just the one death for John Fleming 1921 so, I am going order it - fingers crossed it will be the right one.

Also had a look for Joseph's birth 1884, none - but as I don't know where in England he was born I am not going to find him  :'(

A birth for a Joseph Fleming J quarter 1884 Cockermouth England mother's maiden name Gillespie

Yes, I ordered the the birth certificate for Joseph and it arrived yesterday and confirms George & Margaret Gillespie are his parents.

Not been able to find George Fleming and Margaret Gillespie's marriage for around 1875 on Scotlands People - then on information form the Mitchell Library - it says they were married in Workington.

George & Margaret obviously returned to Dumfries as they had a son Thomas Gillespie Fleming, b. 1887 -  3 years before Margaret died in 1890 and George died the next year 1891.

Thomas aged 3 seemed to have a better start than Joseph, living with another Aunt in Glasgow. I have Thomas's marriage and death certs.
