Another question about Northampton General Hospital
« on: Sunday 26 February 17 22:43 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know where people who died in the hospital were buried?

I am particularly looking for Sarah HAKES, who died there in August 1812.   Before the hospital records went online I could only assume her death from the fact that her husband married again.

I think Sarah died as a consequence of childbirth since her son was born that year.   I've never found a baptism for him either.   Might the hospital have had it's own church or chapel in those days?

Many thanks for any help.

One of my ancestors from Floore died in the hospital. He was buried in All Saints churchyard.
Just across the road from the hospital.

Sometimes people were taken back to their own parish for burial, sometimes they were buried in Northampton. I've seen both.

A young married woman might be taken back to her parent's home parish; and there's always the Nonconformist burial gounds, which don't always have records.

I have to say, I can't see Sarah Hakes anywhere, but when I checked Piddington, there were no burials listed at all from July 1812 to Dec 1812. Did wonder whether they'd managed to miss her off, or alternatively, whether the Baptist church in nearby Hackleton has a burial ground.

Investigating Hackleton, it seems that they did have a burial ground, but they didn't have a register until 1814. While they did record some of the previous burials, the register say, "The names entered in this book before Dec 14 1814 were persons whom the sexton, or their relations, remembered being buried. There had been others buried, but no particular account could be given of them"

If they were attending, however briefly, the Baptist church, that might account for not only the lack of Sarah's burial, but the lack of a baptism for her child as well, as a similar situation applied for the births listed in the Births Register.

Northampton General Hospital's own website has a page on the history.

http://www.northamptongeneral.nhs.uk/AboutUs/Ourhistory/History.aspx

The New Infirmary was built in 1793, at Northampton Fields.

A road was built at the cost of £40 from St. Giles Church to the new hospital.

Patients were admitted on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with the exception of emergencies. This was to coincide with market days so the patients could be brought in by cart from the surrounding villages. Local philanthropists would finance the patient’s admission by "Hospital Letters of Recommendation". In addition to this the sum of 15 shillings was paid as "caution money". This was to cover the cost of the patient's burial, should a cure not be achieved.

The patient, on discharge, had to give thanks to the committee - and if the patient did not comply he/she would not be re-admitted.

Hi mgeneas, PrawnCocktail and KGarrad

Thank you very much for your helpful replies and also for the link to the article on the hospital's history - very interesting and informative.

I may not find Sarah's burial but I do have a date of death and that's hard to better!

Both Kay Collins and myself indexed the Burials and Deaths at Northampton Hospital for
Burials 1827-1886 and Deaths 1837-1840 in case of help to others.
