Ok so more than likely it is not him then as the William Rack relating to my Grandad are more than likely to be one of the three you mentioned?

My view is that it is not William.
There are only the three records showing for William or W Rack and the photo is not of a man from one of the three regiments.  Put the other way round, the man is a cavalryman (the sword is the give-away) and there is no record of a William or W Rack in a cavalry regiment.

That said it could be fantasised that he joined the cavalry pre-war and then transferred but there is absolutely no evidence for that that I can find.

We can't know unfortunately which of the three William or W Racks is William as the medal records have no personal detail.

You are most welcome but this post must contain an apology re the photo.

I should have dealt with another possibility that exists. We know there are no detailed service records in the name of William Rack.  If William didn't serve overseas, then there would be no medal record either, in other words, no record at all.  You might like to ask your source whether they know whether the man they think is William did serve overseas, if the answer is no then the cavalryman might be William but we will never know for sure!.

Good luck with your research.

An update on william rack one possible that he was already in the calvary before the war and was transfered. He was a groom.
here is a link to the info .. havent found the calvery unit yet though.

I see that the person who asserted he was transferred from the cavalry doesn't provide any evidence for that statement.  It also omits the important fact that William Rack joined the 11th Battalion before the 8th (that is from his medal roll entry).  Unfortunately, his record has not survived so an attestation record (which would show previous regiments) cannot be consulted.

Are you acquainted with "curious grandson" who has the same picture as you?

I post on that site often, I'd be happy to ask for the missing evidence.

yes please I really have no clue except to pass the information on. Curious grandson is a relative of william. who passed the photo along with other info regarding williams and my grandads parents on ancestry.co.uk. their parents lived in hildyard street Grimsby during the war.
If you wish to follow it on I would be most greatful as Im sure he would be too.
