WORLINGHAM 1748 marriage look up - SOANS & CAPPS
« on: Monday 27 February 17 00:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi there I wonder if anyone please has access to the marriages of Worlingham.

I am interested in the marriage of Robert Soans and Elisabeth Capps on 10 February 1748.

Firstly I would like to confirm if it is in fact 1749 New Style.

And also I am looking to see if it gives any more information on the entry, such as residence or marital status.

I assume this Robert is the widowed Robert Soans of Corton whose wife Abigail died in 1747, but I am not completely certain.

An Elizabeth Soans, widow, was buried in Corton in 1773 however, so I think this must be her as Robert Soans died in 1769.

I would also like to know if Robert and Elizabeth had any children baptised in Worlingham. There was a Sarah Soans daughter of Robert and Elizabeth baptised and buried in Corton in 1764, but I assume they most likely had other children.

If anyone can help I would be most grateful.

Thank you,
Jon

I have looked for the marriage but can only find transcriptions which only give the basic facts.

I also looked for batisms and only two came up - One for the Sarah you mention in 1764 and the other is 29 August  1749 in Corton, also for a Sarah daughter of Robert and Abigail. It gives the year of birth as 1749 as well which is obviously later than the Abigail death you give. Not sure how accurate the year of birth is - could be correct but also could be based on year of baptism.

Thanks very much for looking. Yes, the Sarah baptised in 1749 is indeed something of a mystery.

I don't know if she was actually a toddler or child at the baptism and indeed Abigail's daughter, or actually the daughter of Robert and second wife Elizabeth and the parish clerk/vicar got confused.

The gap between the 1748 marriage and birth of Sarah is 1764 is also surprising. I had somewhere that Robert and Elizabeth had a son Robert baptised and buried in Worlingham in 1751, but not sure if that is correct.

Thanks again for the reply to my post.

Taken from an indexed transcription of Worlingham parish register

Robert Soans of Brampton
Elisabeth Capps of Worlingham
Both single, married by licence
No status given
February 10th 1748

There is a burial of a Robert Soans infant, on 27th March 1751 but I couldn't see the baptism.

Thanks very much, Annes.

With Robert now being from Brampton this looks like it might be a different Robert Soanes now.

I had seen that a Robert Soane was apprenticed to Edward Allington, a wheeler, in Worlingham in 1741.

Will have to see if the marriage bond survives.

Thanks very much again,
Jon
